105-year-old investigated for guard role at Nazi POW camp

A 105-year-old man is under investigation for serving as a guard at a Nazi POW camp.

German authorities have opened a formal investigation into the elderly man on suspicion of accessory to murder on multiple counts. The 105-year-old man is alleged to have been stationed at Stalag 326, a Wehrmacht camp near Bielefeld that served as a distribution centre for Soviet prisoners of war awaiting forced labour assignments.

The camp was notorious for starvation, disease and brutal conditions. More than 300,000 prisoners passed through its gates across four years.

Germany has no statute of limitations for murder or accessory to murder, allowing prosecutors to pursue cases decades after the Nazi era. The Central Office for the Investigation of National Socialist Crimes identified the suspect and passed the case to Dortmund prosecutors in March.

German courts have ruled that service at such facilities can constitute accessory to murder if an individual knowingly supported systematic killings.

Why it mattersThe case shows Germany continues holding even very elderly suspects accountable for wartime atrocities, regardless of how long ago the crimes occurred.

AustraliaNo direct Australian effect, but the investigation reflects how democracies pursue historical justice and hold individuals responsible for complicity in systematic killings, a principle that has shaped international law.
