Nobel Prize 2026 physics award announced today
The Royal Swedish Academy announces the 2026 physics Nobel Prize winner today.
The Nobel Prize in physics is announced today by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm. Last year's physics laureates won for studying quantum tunnelling.
Quantum tunnelling is unusual behavior of subatomic particles. Quantum tunnelling research enabled ultra-sensitive measurements in MRI machines.
It also laid groundwork for better mobile phones and faster computers. The 2026 physics prize is part of a week of Nobel announcements.
Medicine was awarded yesterday. Chemistry follows Wednesday.
Literature is Thursday. Peace is Friday.
Economics comes on October 12. The prize is worth 12 million Swedish kronor, or about $A1.7 million.
Why it mattersThe award highlights scientific work that transformed medical technology and shaped modern computing.
AustraliaNo direct Australian consequence, though the honour recognises physics that powers medical and computing technology worldwide.
