Klinefelter syndrome went undiagnosed for decades despite clinic visits

Samuel Goodwin-Dorning had genetic infertility. He wasn't diagnosed until age 42. This happened despite decades of medical visits.

Samuel Goodwin-Dorning went to doctor's appointments for years. No one spotted that he had two X chromosomes instead of one.

Having two X chromosomes meant he had Klinefelter syndrome. The syndrome often makes men infertile.

But the symptoms are mild: smaller genitals, larger breasts, less body hair. This means the condition often goes undetected until a couple tries to have a baby.

Goodwin-Dorning learned the truth at 42. He felt angry about the missed diagnosis.

"I was angry that I'd slipped through the cracks," he says. Male infertility causes up to 50 per cent of all infertility cases.

Yet it remains poorly researched. Of the IVF cycles done in Australia and New Zealand in 2024 due to male-factor infertility, 75 per cent had unexplained causes.

Klinefelter syndrome alone affects one or two in 1,000 Australian males.

Why it mattersMen with undiagnosed fertility conditions face years of failed treatments and emotional trauma. Better screening and research could catch these conditions earlier.

AustraliaThousands of Australian men may be walking around with undiagnosed infertility, particularly Klinefelter syndrome, because male fertility remains a blind spot in medical training and screening protocols.
