Keith Hefford, 84, says he'll quit work when he's dead

An 84-year-old second-hand shop owner in Fingal, Vic, survived a violent 2019 home invasion and remained in his community.

Keith Hefford has never left Fingal. For most of his life, he has watched the quiet town change, fewer kids, more strangers, but the community rallied around him after three women assaulted him in a home invasion in 2019.

Now he opens his second-hand shop, Aladdin's Cave, three days a week. Keith Hefford sells books, DVDs, clocks, toys, lamps, and bags of wheat, "anything and everything I can get a hold of."

His lingering injuries from the assault haven't slowed him down. He tends a garden, sells plants for his neighbour, and runs the shop mostly for company with visitors and tourists.

He has travelled far, to Dubai to climb the Burj Khalifa, to Alaska and London, but he says there is no place like home. He will retire, he insists, only when he's "six foot under."

Why it mattersIn aging rural Australia, Hefford shows how community connection and purpose can outlast trauma and time.

AustraliaHis story reflects a larger truth about regional communities: connection and work matter more than retirement when you belong somewhere real.
