Three migration visions: One Nation wants negative numbers, Coalition targets

The Coalition has pledged to halve migration to 100,000 for two years; One Nation wants negative migration; Labor targets 225,000.

Australia's three major political forces now each offer a starkly different migration path. The Coalition wants to cut net migration to just over 100,000 a year for two years, then rise to 160,000 by year four.

One Nation promises to cut 750,000 people over up to three years, moving to negative net migration so more leave than arrive. Labor aims to return to 225,000 a year by 2028.

The tension is real: every cut removes workers from sectors already short of staff, risks slowing already sluggish economic growth, and threatens aged care and health services.

Why it mattersMigration policy will shape housing supply, wage pressure, workforce gaps, and living costs for years. The three visions differ so widely that the next government will reset the entire system.

AustraliaAustralians will vote on radically different migration futures, affecting rent and house prices, jobs in health and aged care, and whether industries can fill skill shortages without foreign workers.
