65% of Australians now worried AI will weaken thinking and creativity

A Roy Morgan survey found 65 per cent of Australians increasingly concerned about artificial intelligence, up 8 per cent since 2023.

Two in three Australians now worry that widespread AI use threatens their ability to think independently and create, according to a fresh Roy Morgan survey of 2568 people. The result is up 8 per cent since 2023.

Specifically, one in five fear loss of critical thinking and creativity skills. Young people feel the anxiety most sharply, especially when AI use becomes a job requirement.

Isabella Halusek, 21, is a film student at Sydney University juggling three casual jobs. She finds herself applying for roles where employers expect or demand she use AI in editing and writing.

She worries she is trading away skills she spent years learning. AI strategist Deb Szabo says the real danger is passive use.

If you accept an AI answer without questioning it, skills do weaken. But using AI to challenge your thinking, fill gaps, and speed execution keeps you in charge.
