Casual staff at University of Canberra win 17 per cent superannuation

Casual staff at University of Canberra will receive 17 per cent superannuation by 2030, the best rate in the university sector.

University of Canberra staff have voted to accept a pay deal that lifts casual workers' superannuation to 17 per cent by 2030, matching permanent staff entitlements. Currently casuals receive 12 per cent.

The deal also includes a 14.5 per cent pay rise over four years, breaking down as 1.5 per cent for the rest of 2026 and 3.25 per cent each January through 2030. Casual staff also gain access to 30 weeks paid parental leave, long-service leave, and expanded career development.

University of Tasmania and Newcastle are set to follow. The union called it the best pay outcome at universities this bargaining round and a win for closing the gender superannuation gap, noting there is often a gender disparity when it comes to casualisation.
