Over 300 Canberra Hospital cleaners move to permanent government jobs

Over 300 contract cleaners at Canberra Hospital become permanent ACT public servants from October 1.

For over a decade, the United Workers Union pushed for change. The union wanted to move the cleaners from shaky private contracts to stable government jobs.

From October 1, more than 300 cleaners and three gardeners will become permanent ACT public servants. Private contractors had to bid for work repeatedly.

This made it hard for workers to plan ahead or build careers. The new arrangement offers permanent positions with better job security and clear paths forward.

Health Minister Marisa Paterson said cleaners play an important role keeping hospitals clean and safe. Their new uniforms marked recognition of their daily work.
