3,600 elderly stranded in hospital beds, waiting for aged care spots
More than 3,600 older Australians are stuck in public hospitals waiting for aged care spots.
Over 3,600 elderly people are stranded in Australian public hospitals waiting for aged care spots. Of these, 80 are in Canberra.
The number has jumped from 2,736 in mid-2025, a 35 per cent increase in only six months. Almost 100,000 people are waiting for Support at Home packages.
These packages would let them leave hospital and recover in the community. Older people admitted to hospital after a medical episode, such as a stroke or fall, may be unable to leave unless they have a residential care bed or home support package.
Some end up waiting in emergency departments. ACT Health Minister Dr Marisa Paterson said these delays are difficult for patients and their families.
They add pressure to the wider health system. Sector leaders say promised investments in residential aged care beds are not happening.
Funding increases are only up to inflation.
