Air Services Australia activates rare TIBA airspace after controller shortage
Air Services Australia declared TIBA airspace (traffic information broadcasts by aircraft) active for two separate 45-minute periods on Sunday. This was the first time the measure was used in a major city in years. Pilots flying through the affected area must broadcast their own positions to each other instead of getting normal air traffic control. The measure affects flights between Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra.
Australia is short on air traffic controllers. When TIBA is active, pilots must broadcast their positions to each other because normal air traffic control is limited.
Airlines must create new flight plans. Some flights will take longer routes.
Others will be delayed. At least one airline has refused to fly through the area, saying it is too dangerous.
The measure came a day after a Qantas flight had engine trouble and was diverted to Christchurch.
Why it mattersThe controller shortage has become serious enough to force this rare measure. It is now causing delays and extra costs for airlines and passengers.
AustraliaTravellers flying between Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane may face delays or flight cancellations as airlines adjust schedules and routes.
