North-east Tasmania faces above-normal bushfire risk as spring approaches

Authorities warn Tasmania's east coast will face higher-than-normal fire danger due to below-average rainfall and above-average temperatures.

A firefighter who handled 196 phone calls in a single day faced several fires in December 2025. Now chief of the Tasmanian Fire Service's southern region, Simon Pilkington saw flames tear through Dolphin Sands.

The fires destroyed 19 homes and burned 700 hectares in fewer than 10 hours. The window to fight them was small but the impact huge.

Tasmania has had below-average rainfall this year and a record-warm winter. Temperatures are expected to stay above average through spring and early summer.

If rain does not arrive, the north-east and east coast will face above-normal fire risk. Fire service officials urge residents to complete a bushfire plan and take evacuation warnings seriously now, not later.
