Canberra steps up bird flu readiness as virus reaches Goulburn

H5 bird flu confirmed in Goulburn, prompting Canberra to start pandemic readiness plans for seven priority wildlife zones.

H5 bird flu has not reached the ACT yet. Authorities are stepping up preparations after the virus was confirmed nearby in Goulburn.

A greater crested tern tested positive there. Confirmed NSW cases now total 30 as of mid-September, mostly on the South Coast and Illawarra.

The ACT has set up an Incident Management Team. Around 150 government staff and contractors have been trained for rapid response.

Seven priority locations have preparedness plans in place. These include Jerrabomberra Wetlands, Canberra's lakes, and river corridors.

The strategy if the virus arrives is increased watching, vet checks, and public information. Residents should follow three simple steps.

Avoid touching sick or dead wildlife. Record details and location if they spot unusual deaths.

Report multiple sick or dead birds to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888. Pet owners are being urged to keep dogs and cats away from sick or dead wildlife.
